My Mission

The goal of this project is to determine which naturally occurring nanostructures inhibit bacteria the best. I will test cicada wings, lotus plants, and shark skin against three different types of bacteria that behave in same way as those that cause nosocomial infections. The biological sample that is most resistant to harmful bacteria can be recreated synthetically for real world use. Structures like these may have the ability to replace, in some capacity, antibiotic topical treatments and disinfectants.

Why Does This Matter?

Bio films affect countless industries from medical settings to fisheries. Bio films come in many forms, however the bacteria that accumulates inside and outside the body is becoming increasingly more dangerous. A product at surface level is financially sustainable, will benefit public health, and would provide a technological advantage on a large scale.
